TRAVELOGUE: THE SUMMER I MET A SHORELESS FISHERMAN - Part 1

I was sleeping half the time I was onboard the OceanJet. It’s the best remedy to contest seasickness and get rested before arriving Siquijor. It was 7 in the evening when we docked at Dumaguete City port. I calculated, we’ve spent 4 hours already on the sea after we left Pier 1 of Cebu City, no wonder my rear sored. I stayed still on my settee as I watched passengers disembarking and after a while few more were embarking for the last stretch of our trip. We still have 1 hour further to cross the Philippine deep before we’ll finally dock at Siquijor port.

Summers are always a good time to cruise this part of the Philippine ocean. I know for certain, most locals won’t propose travelling on the months of August to December when you’re not a frequent sea traveller. Monsoon winds on these months are just too fierce. Waves are often too enraged and for certain you’ll swear to the gods of seas not to return and take this route again. But on the night of that summer we travelled, the water was emolliently composed and the rhapsodic moon where our ferry was heading gleam in light like a golden asphalt highway in the dark.

 photo Oceanjet.jpg

The moonlight was in some way revealed a trifling mystery of the stillness of the sea. I might have looked on what I thought a calm-night artist’s masterpiece out the glass paneled boat window for an hour. I lost track of the time, then I felt the boat’s engine slowed down and I can hear gang planks banging by the boat’s flank, then the vessel captain announced ‘Welcome to Siquijor, ‘maayong pag-bot’* (*happy arrival).

 photo Golden-Hour-at-the-port.jpg
Golden Hour at Siquijor Port
It’s been 28 years. I was in sixth grade the last time I was standing on this very dock to head for good to the island of Mindanao. We headed to claim our baggage in the dark. Thing with travelling with kids you can’t help it but have extra baggages. And then we joined the other passengers and walked towards the people waiting in the low-lit port fence.

My cousins came to get me. I had an obstinate sentiment defining my cousins’ miens in the faint light of the moon. After the little family meet-up ruckus at the port, where even in darkness I can see people were on us, we took the ride home. They’ve gotten graceful age and so was I, of course. But the slur of the distinctive Siquijorian mother tongue and the intensities of their peculiar and familiar voices were like levers that turned on my childhood memories and brought me back right where I left 28 years ago.

Standard wool blend pant and skirt suits don't have to be boring to be suitable for the office. MYTHS ABOUT VISITING THE DENTIST

 photo pretty-closeup-smile.jpg

Although everyone is encouraged to visit the dentist at least every six months, some people have a very deep fear of being seen by a dentist. Due to the numerous horror stories that are circulated, reputable dentists have obtained an unfair stereotype. Here are some of the common misconceptions about visiting the dentist.

Myth: Dentists are very painful.
Competent dentists make sure their patients experience a minimal amount of discomfort. During certain dental procedures, the dentist will even provide anesthesia to the patient. Choosing not to visit the dentist can lead to major health problems in the long run.

Myth: The dentist will embarrass me.
Dentists have seen all types of dental problems. From rotten teeth to gum disease, experienced dentists are well-versed in dealing with every type of dental problem. The primary goal of the dentist is to make sure that an individual's teeth remain as healthy as possible.

Myth: Dental checkups are a complete waste of time.
Visiting the dentist on a regular basis is one of the most important aspects of good health. Upon visiting the dentist, a person may be able to prevent the onset of certain ailments such as gum disease and tooth decay. In some instances, a dentist may even save a person's life.

Myth: A dentist can not help the condition of my teeth.
Regardless of the condition of a person’s teeth, a dentist can dramatically improve their dental health. For more information on visiting a dentist, click here.

We rode a jeepney to my aunt’s old house in the town of San Juan. The night ride was balmy and breezy. My cousins now all-too familiar voices firing endless ‘how-are-yous’ filled the warm ride home, a genial sentiment that made me took in the moment – oh, finally I’m home. I ducked out my head to breathe-in familiar scents of summer. The whiffs this short night ride has, burrowed reminiscences out of my arcane and emotional amygdala. The earthy night mists, the sun-burnt grasses, the scent of Calachuchi and Dama de Noche brought out the remembrance that reconnect me back to the place where I first saw light and cried - my birthplace.

 photo Hammock-by-the-sea.jpg

I woke up hearing tender waves smacking the shore. I know its early morning, I just can’t tell what time in the morning. I was searching for my cellphone; I figured it’s a default morning habit of anyone who lives chasing time in the city. But I can’t find it, so I sat up and look around for a clock – it was futile. The cottage where we billeted was devoid of time device. A good circumstance I thought. This would be the time where my stomach would tell me when to eat and not the clock on the wall. I went out sluggishly.

My husband and my kids were still snoring, obviously tired after a late-night pool swimming. I sat on the rattan hammock mounted on two coconut trees right at the doorstep of our cottage. From a distance, I can see a lone, small blue boat anchored in the shallow part of the sea. Fluffy clouds line above the horizon where the morning sky meets the sea, they’re like small polar bears walking above the water. They’re like telling me – today will be a fine and sundrenched day.

 photo beach.jpg

I once read that the cure to anything is saltwater. Indeed, the morning serenity of the sea is more than a cure to clear all life’s worries away – pure, unadulterated, unsullied peaceful promise that a good day is up ahead of me. The morning tranquil seascape just emptied everything out of my reason. Then it occurred. This ocean is truly like humans, is it? – Always has it flipside. It has this tranquility that heals and an upheaval that wrecks.

We may each time favor the former but there’s nothing to rectify when we never come across shatters that one day would put us on heel to find calm healing from the sea.

Read PART 2 of the story here.

The following day, I went to visit my godmother. She lived in a modest stone house right across a convent. I used to join ‘Flores de Mayo’ (Flowers of May) back in my fledgling years here. It’s a summer flower festival celebrated by Catholic faithfuls in honor of Virgin Mary. Sad as it may seem, my memory didn’t quiet help recall who I was with in particular in that religious interlude 28 years ago. But I have this vivid picture that I used to climb a big Calachuchi branch at the sideyard of that stone house. I used to wobble hard the branches to let those pink and white delicate summer flowers fall to the ground. We would string them together to make a circlet and put it in the timeworn hand of the statue of Virgin Mary.

Then after several songs and a good amount of time of restless listening, we would be given tickets to claim our afternoon nutri-ban and down it with a cold Santol juice which I just remembered we’re obliged to bring a cup of our own. We would play until the old church bell rung. That sound signaled it’s time to say the 6’oclock prayer – The Angelus. San Juan town is predominantly Catholic. The church bell, accustomed everyone that whatever you do, wherever you are – devotion should be put above everything and face the direction of the church to utter the supplication older than the prayer itself.

 photo San-Juan-church-1.jpg
San Juan, Siquijor Church

The house looked peculiar against the newly built dwellings nestled in the far end of the lane. Though the interior now looks a little modern with cushioned sofa and flatscreen TV against the wooden wall, but the old yellow and emerald stained Spanish floor tiles, the wrought-iron railings perched along the stone-tiered stairway, the Spanish wooden awning windows were still the same the way I left 2 decades and 8 years ago – quaint, worn out by time. A prospect of antiquity that articulated a thick and rich history of the house and those who lived there.

 photo acacia-tree.jpg

My godmother in her prime holds significant political and religious position in the island. And by that it follows that she also pool a repository of oral histories and stories of innumerable family and community events in the island. She didn’t recognize me. I let her remember by telling her who my grandfather and my father were. And then like a light bulb, her eyes widened in recognition and I paid my homage to a woman who once looked after me and took care of me.

She’s now so old, so weak, and so frail but still has a command in her voice which I used to be terrified of. She sat on her old wooden rocking chair and told me she’s not pleased about having all these foreigners in the island. Most of the resort developments in Siquijor Island were partly owned by foreigners. As we all know they can’t solely own a company in this country, hence, they marry locals which become their business partner - in paper.

My godmother was shaking while telling me that If only the locals would listen to her, they should not sell their land because in the long run, they’ll have nothing if they’ll forego the legacy of their forefathers in favor of the luxurious development that is now spreading like wildfire in the shores of the island. Even in her limp tone she keenly told me about one incident where the fishermen protested and threw stones at one resort owner.

The resort owners along a certain stretch of white sand shoreline won’t allow the fishermen to berth on their fishing boats anymore. They become eye sore and their livelihood litters were not pleasing to the eyes. Every word she said came with pain and inescapable regret, a harrowing prize they have to pay in exchange of the ‘haves’ luxury not even few of the ‘have-nots’ tried and experienced.

LOVE MONTH’S ULTIMATE MUST HAVE: SWISH MOUTHWASH

My shy Valentine's date

It is official we’re finally breathing love in the air. The month of love has arrived. I know you’re all feeling frivolous, anxious in fact, where the love of your life’s going take you this Valentine’s Day.

But more than the signature restaurants and hotels, the luxurious spa, the beautiful bouquet of flowers and gifts, the gorgeous get-up and make-up that we ladies are dying to anticipate, we shouldn’t forget one important thing to bring on that unforgettable night. I know the pleasantness of the night wouldn’t end without saying ‘I love yous’ and ‘I like yous’ and we don’t want to turn off our partners with our not so good breaths, right? This night is supposed to be perfect in every way, and guess what? I just have a perfect idea not to spoil it.

Your love month’s ultimate must have – SWISH MOUTHWASH

I’ve been a long time user of Swish Mouthwash and it hasn’t failed me since. Swish Mouthwash has five awesome variants – They have the Arctic Chill, the Peppermint Fresh and three variants that I’m going to share my experience using it with you are, Icy Choco Mint, Mangosteen Mint and the Cinnamon Blast.

 photo Swish-1.jpg

Swish Mouthwash: Icy Choco Mint

If you love deep mentholated zing in your mouthwash, this variant is for you. Gargling it a little longer will let you feel the hint of chocolate in your mouth. The balance of sweet and menthol sensation gives you an after feel of sweet-smelling and minty, fresh breath.

This is my husband’s and my eldest son’s morning ritual staple, sort of can't leave the house without.

 photo Swish-2.jpg
Swish Mouthwash: Icy Choco Mint

Swish Mouthwash: Mangosteen Mint

Mangosteen, a very common fruit here in Davao next to Durian. Its taste has this delicate sharpness reminiscent of mandarin oranges and light floral hints of lychee, peach and strawberry. If these are all bottled up together you get a good zest of vibrant and fruity tang. Then packed in more light mint in it, you get a mouth wash in fresh Mangosteen Mint.

Ladies, you’ll love this variant, the menthol doesn’t bite as much as the Icy Choco Mint, it’s milder and no burning sensation in your mouth.

 photo Swish-3.jpg
Swish Mouthwash: Mangosteen Mint

 Swish Mouthwash: Cinnamon Blast

Cinnamon as a spice exudes a delicate floral aroma. It has a distinct sweetness and pepper-like heat which often we identify it on our food with. Swish has come up with a novel idea to pack this aromatics into a bottle, and the result – a sweet, spicy and minty after feel mouthwash. You’ll love these ladies, I know not all of us can take a strong menthol after feel; this variant is as mild as the Mangosteen Mint.

All variants of Swish Mouthwash has a handy purse pack bottle, so whichever variant you decide to bring on your date, you can just easily slip it in your purse and you’re good to go. Very fresh convenience.

3 TIPS ON HOW TO ACHIEVE PROGRESSIVE BODY RELAXATION

 photo benefits_of_massage.jpg

Stress is one of the factors why we can’t deal fully with our everyday task. People under stress have high symptoms of irritability, bad-temperedness that will eventually lead to other serious complications when not attended to. And I don’t want to stress you further, here are three simple steps to relaxation; you can do these exercises twice a day preferably in the morning and just before you go to sleep.

1. Stretch your legs, feeling the tension in all your muscles. Stretch them tighter; hold for a few seconds. Then let go and feel the relaxation spread through all your muscles - in your toes, feet, calves and thighs. Do the same exercise with your arms, chest, stomach and back. Then take a very deep breath and hold it for about 5 seconds. Release your breath slowly feeling the tension and strain pouring out. Repeat this process twice.

2. Think of a pleasant scene that makes you feel calm and relaxed. Feel the sensation of relaxation, set your mind to think only these words, ‘I feel calm and relaxed.'

3. Get a massage. Massage is one of the oldest methods known to humans to bring a stressed body to relaxation. You can contact an acupuncturist Calgary for appointment to start your session. This kind of body work can alleviate pain and muscle spasms. It can also relieve headache, shoulder and neck pain. Wellness experts say that touches from massages can lessen depression, promotes mental alertness and cupping Calgary massage center can offer this to further improve blood circulation and body flexibility.

On a more personal level, despite changes and hassles of whatever life has to offer me, my philosophy had not change a bit. In our present time and space, stress is given. Nobody gets out of this planet alive anyway, so let's take things lightly, relax and take things slowly.

Hibiscus bloom at Agri-Trade Fair (March 1-31, 2014)
SM Ecoland Grounds, Davao City

Davao City will be celebrating its 77th Founding Anniversary this March 2014. Lots of exciting activities are lined for those who love to go out and celebrate. Here’s a schedule you can run through so won't get lost following the rest of the festivities. I always look forward to festivities like this in the city, that is because of the Agri-Trade Fair, it's kind of city tradition already. I can live with only this, lol.

But seriously, you should come down to Davao and find the rarest and see the latest (latest meaning horticulturist's newest crossbreeds and genetically altered plants to enhance their aesthetic feature) of floras and ornamental plants for sale at the Agri Fair. I’ll score several lemon plantlets shortly before they’ll wrap up on March 31st. You know 'sira mano'. I’m sure I can get a nice discount on this.

And Oh, the great Davao Fun Sale is also up starting March 14 until March 16, I heard malls will be dropping bottoms, super low on these dates, so see you around and have a great time roaming Davao.

A TASTE OF IRELAND AT CAFÉ EL GATO

A TASTE OF IRELAND AT CAFÉ EL GATO

Café el Gato has been serving good food since 2009. I had my share of good times and good friends sharing good food by the clubhouse pool here years back. But because of its location where it is a bit far from downtown Davao, it’s only on exceptional occasions that I get to drive down here. And so when I get invited to join Princess Dizon Marfori for a Special Irish luncheon, I delightedly said yes.

Café el Gato was initially intended to be a Mexican Restaurant, hence the name. But because of its location and upscale clientele, they thought offering international menu would be most appropriate as foodies are like bees, they'd love to explore and discover delicious no matter how distant or near the honey place would be. Right now, Café el Gato has great and diverse list of food options in their menu. But Ms. Marfori want to present more than their usual food spread. Something that’s less familiar yet interesting enough to discerning Davaoeno palates that bring in influences from her foreign travels and unique cultural food encounters abroad.

A TASTE OF IRELAND AT CAFÉ EL GATO

As a result, Café el Gato has come up with various distinctive dining experiences like Valentine’s Day Dining in the Dark where guests were treated to a sensuous dinner while being blindfolded, American Thanksgiving Dinner, Mother’s Day Lunch and Tea Party, 4th of July BBQ Pool Party to name a few. And the latest – The St. Patrick’s Week Celebration which will run from March 17 to 23, 2014.

St. Patrick’s Day, observed on March 17 is largely a cultural and religious holiday in Ireland. It is also widely celebrated by countries with outsized Irish diaspora. This is usually celebrated with a decent spread of traditional Irish Cuisine. We may not be Irish, but I know just where we can experience delicious Irish food culture right now – Café el Gato.

So, let me bring you to the Irish table down Café el Gato…

For starters we have ...

Language and Culture

I’m a proud Bisaya and I’ve never been prouder to be one. I wonder even why Manuel L. Quezon had declared Filipino as National Language when Cebuano is one that’s widely spoken. Well, this can be a subject of political and cultural debate but this is not what this blog post is all about.

First, I’d like to give credit to the person who compiled this thing. Whoever you are, please let me borrow your work. Shoot me a mail and I’ll gladly acknowledge you properly.

Second, the reason why I’m sharing this because, I have never laughed reading a meme like I’ve laughed reading this one. I really had a good laugh on this, talk about ‘mababaw ang kaligayahan’ well, that’s unpretentiously me. *Tummy shudders.

Third, language is one of the most exclusive elements of culture. There are semantics and discreet cultural nuances that can only be understood in the context of that culture. And in this case, the Bisayan speaking and its unique cultural gradations in deducing this meme, well, what can I say? Share a good laugh with me.

Ok, if Hollywood movies were titled in Bisaya, which as you can see they’re not really translated en toto but as I have said there are cultural gradations that can only be appreciated in the light of where the presenter is coming from. And again, if Hollywood movies were titled in Bisaya, this is how it would appear in the billing and by now, you're also wiping your tears and laughing your heart out with me.

THE INCREASE IN AT-HOME CARE

THE INCREASE IN AT-HOME CARE
Statistics show that millions of people receive home health services. That number of people needing and utilizing the services of home care agencies is predicted to continually increase. If the time is near or has come that you or a family member is in need of some assistance, you will find it comforting to know there are many in-home care services available. In your quest to learn more about in-home care, you will discover that the range of service options cover everything from companion care to specialized care.

The circumstances that make in-home care necessary are as varied as the types of care someone may need. In-home care is available for people with long or short-term disabilities. Following an injury, heart attack or surgery, most people are eager to return home. Having in-home care enables them to achieve their goal more quickly. Recovering from a stroke can be a lengthy process. Receiving personal care, therapy and help with household chores makes it possible for someone to return to familiar surroundings during the extensive rehabilitation process.

Alzheimer's and dementia are progressive diseases that must be managed accordingly. When you begin to notice signs that indicate your loved one is not eating properly, can't manage their medication schedule, are not taking care of themselves or the house as they once did and their forgetfulness raises concerns, it is time to get some in-home help for them. Scheduling an in-home consultation is a good place to start. Trained professionals can evaluate your specific situation and offer a personalized plan that will address your loved one current needs. As time goes by, this plan can be adjusted to accommodate the changes in your loved one's situation.

While nursing care, specialized care involving ventilators and medication management are services an in-home agency can provide, they also offer non-medical services that can make your loved one more comfortable and safe as well as reduce your level of stress. Your job, the location of your home and your family life may make it difficult or impossible for you to transport an elderly family member to the doctor or to various other places. Transportation, housekeeping services and tasks such as grocery shopping can be done by a non-medical caregiver. Respite service is another way that a home care agency can make life a little less stressful for you if you are the primary caregiver for a loved one.

PERFECT DATE NIGHT EDT: BURBERRY BODY

DATE NIGHT EDT: BURBERRY BODY

I’ve been lusting on this scent since it came out in 2011. Got mesmerized by Rosie Huntington-Whitely gone naked on the ad, lol. But the price tag was a killer then, so I deferred my naked desire to own this overpriced bottle. Thought I have more important stuff to spend my money with and not a practical vanity, so to speak, to capitalize on.

Until one day last week, for some hormonal reasons, lol. I finally had one cashed-out without any thought of consciential consideration, whatsoever. Heck, I W.A.N.T this, period. So here it is.

Love the bottle, it’s lean and compact. It occupies less space on my desk. It’s exactly what I expected it to be – chypre opulence. I call it a date night EDT coz, it’s a perfect fragrance to wear on a date – teasing not overpowering yet perfectly inviting.

Burberry Body has a fruity combination that begins with scent notes of fresh green absinthe, peach and freesia. Roses and iris are in the heart, leaning on the base of sandalwood, cashmerean, musk, amber and vanilla. But generally I take it to carry a rosy, musky and woody fragrant combination.

It’s kind of pricey. But heck, I want it. End of discussion, hahaha!

Have you found any scent seemed interesting lately? Would love to hear your experience, drop me a line then, would appreciate it very much.

LIGHTWEIGHT, CLASSIC CASHMERE

Once upon a time, when you thought of cashmere, you thought of warm, heavy sweaters, probably cardigans. These days, cashmere comes in a plethora of delightful styles and weights. Whether you’re dressing up to go on the town, dressing down to spend a cozy day at home or dressing in your best style for a workday at the office, you can add some lightweight cashmere to your outfit for a touch of both class and comfort.

Though cashmere is costly, its beauty and warmth can add classic style to your wardrobe, and it can have a long life if you launder it gently by hand and remove pills promptly. You’ll want to take good care of your cashmere, since it has a stylish versatility that lends itself to all sorts of fashion statements. For the lightest touch, you might want to try a cashmere t-shirt, whose softness will likely make you never want to go back to any other casual tee. A cashmere shawl can dress up a snazzy dress. Try pairing a light, neutral shade or a bold color with a dark dress in the evening. A cashmere wrap can hang loose over a tunic or tee or be wrapped around the neck more snugly like a scarf.

destination weddings in Florida

When planning a wedding, one of the top things that should be considered and as fast as possible decided is which destination should the couple chose. The process becomes really stressful, because there are many aspects that are influenced by the place you get to choose. This is why every bride in US wants the best destination weddings in Florida, or maybe in some other place, that will make the event look and feel better. This is why here are some tips on how to plan a destination wedding.

Firstly, what you need to know is that there is a destination for every couple. So, don’t freak out if in the beginning of your search, it will seem like there is no place that fits your fantasy and your idea of how it should be. Today, a growing number of couples decide to get married in a place that may be far away from their city. The reasons are different, starting with the fact that it may be cheaper and ending up with the love the groom has for specific mountain landscapes. As it is already said, there is a destination for everyone. Have patience and you will find the place that will clique instantly with your heart, but don’t hurry to make a payment on some website with nice pictures. All the professional wedding planners suggest to visit the destination and to even witness how another wedding takes place there.

Secondly, if your budget is limited, but you really want all of your guests to travel to the destination, make a limited guest list. That’s a well known universal truth that you will feel better having just a few people around you, who are really close to you and who really care about the wedding.

Another thing you have to really consider is planning the destination wedding with a long period of time in advance. Things may change, but if looking from all the points of view, you’ll only win if you’ll get everything organized early. Something else that’s simply logical is to take care about the weather. Don’t be lazy to check it every week, before the event and even if an unplanned rain hits the wedding, you better be ready.

Even if it is your wedding and you are the queen that decides everything, don’t forget about what the guests may expect from the event. If you invited them, it means they own a special tiny place in your heart. This is why you have to be really attentive to them. Send the invitations and with a phone call or email, make it all clear. Tell them about the destination, how to get there, what is the dress code if there is one and what other things they should know.

TRAVELOGUE: THE SUMMER I MET A SHORELESS FISHERMAN – Last Part

Fishermen’s ingenuity
Fishermen’s ingenuity. You can’t keep a steady lamp in a windy shore.
So to keep the oil lamp glinting, the fishermen planted them inside
a bottomless bottle.

It’s my prayer that one day a scholar will come up with a book filled with mystic stories and great legends that trailed off this island they call – The Island of Fire. I thought maybe one day, I’ll do it. (Why not?)

In full summer gear, we’re all mighty ready to ride around the island. The entire landmass of Siquijor can be rounded, using the circumferential road, for about an hour and a half via single motorcycle or easy rides that can be hired around. There’s a flat rate for the island tour that the Department of Tourism has set, so there’s no worry about tourists being taken advantaged of in terms of tour tariff.

Our sightseeing went searingly fine, summers are usually extra hot but we’ve prepared for it. We did our round to have a good time and not our urban usual – to get on time. You’ll be surprised to know that for a province with fifth, fourth, third class municipalities categorized under it; people can afford to build splendid big houses and rest houses by the sea. Well, I was told, they’re built partly by foreign counterparts, like locals having alien husbands or locals working as OFW and sending money home to build it.

The following day, I woke up from my afternoon nap feeling hungry and thirsty. I went out to the resort restaurant and scanned the menu. I ordered rice and ‘kinilaw’, it’s a local raw fish delicacy drench in vinegar, spices and seasonings. I always have a plate or two of this raw dish back in Davao but the Siquijor version has a little twist in it. They used grated Sineguelas (Spanish Plum) bark to zest in the mix. So the flavor came out to have a little hint of ‘aplud’ taste (ascerbic) that purged out the ‘lansa’ of the fish.

Forgive my moderated indulgence; God, I finished two cups of rice and a helping of Rocky Road for dessert. Feeling heavy, I decided to take a little walk far out of the resort. This island has zero crime rate recorded, so it’s safe to roam around even when you’re alone. Only that sometimes you meet along peculiar and wonderful people that will purport your weird and wild imagination that they might be casting spells and black magic to vulnerable and lonesome strollers like me, in which as we all know, this island has been so culturally prominent to allegedly doing so.

Few minutes later, playing along with my foot the white sugar-like sand in the shoreline, I saw a thin man sitting in a banqueto. His arms and face skin were wrinkled and has a color burnt by the unforgiving sun of constant call to the sea. He was wearing a green tattered camisa de chino and was seated along a generous heap of lucid fishing nets. In his hands were a slim slab of customized bamboo needle and a spool of nylon thread the size of the ones used in the fishing nets. He was silently and intently plaiting the torn parts of the fishing nets.

“Good afternoon, Manong”,

I greeted. He smiled. A genuine and toothy smile that reached his eyes. He asked me where I am headed.

“I’m just walking around, what are you doing?”

“You’re new here, a tourist.” he said it in a tone he was so sure I was. Locals here practically knew each other, so unfamiliar faces like mine can easily be judged as visiting someone.

“Not a tourist really, I was born here 42 years ago and I’m paying homage to my birthplace. I’m staying at the resort.” I answered casually pointing at where I came from. He eased and smiled again. We began talking like we’ve known each for so long, him asking who my forebears were and me asking what life would be like now having all these luxury resorts around.

“Do you own that fishing boat?” I asked pointing to the berthed boat not far from us.

“Yes, I do and I’m not sure where to dock that the moment construction of the new resort will start riling here.” He said sadly and as a matter-of-factly.

“You mean, this place where you’re staying is not yours?” I asked puzzled?

“Yes, I sold it, I thought it was the best offer and now that we have used the money, I don’t know what will happen to us and where we are going to move?”

I went silent for a long while; I went sticking in the sand looking blankly out to the sea. This was exactly what my godmother was talking about. For now, I can only sympathize with profound contriteness having played a little role in breeding this leisure industry and on the side write this story.

I can only pray that his pain of deliberately losing his legacy will be compensated by God knows what provision that will ensure his family's survival in the days to come. I’m just hoping his story reaches the self-seeking shores of those who grab and would be grabber of not just pristine coasts in favor of luxury but lives and livelihood that turned this fisherman and the others he represent, shoreless.

But judging how development moves so fast these days, I doubt if this could be ascertained. The pains of development can be felt all over us, it's inevitable, it's where our civilization is headed and they're here to stay. It’s just a matter of time that these perilous orbs will come bursting and marring our world. Look around you the next time you go on a trip.

 photo pearl-bracelets1.jpg

Pearls have been prized for their luster and beauty since ancient times. Though man has found a way to imitate nature, there's still nothing like a natural pearl. Whether you wear them as earrings, in a pendant or on a strand, pearls are the ultimate gift for yourself or another special person in your life. The Internet has made it easier to shop the world for the ultimate pearl collections, right form the privacy of your home. Due to the fact that online purchases are necessarily sight-unseen transactions, here are some guidelines to finding a reputable online retailer or wholesaler.

1. Use search tools to find out about the specific type of jewelry you're interested in purchasing. Don't just look for suppliers, but look at the specific, like grading standards and measurements.

2. Once you know what type of jewelry you want and a little about what to look for in the quality department, search for suppliers who specialize in that type of jewelry, whether it's gold, silver, gemstones or pearls.

3. Know the ring sizes or other specifics for your jewelry purchase to make it easier when it comes time to order. This also enables you to know if the website you're considering has what you're looking for in the right size.

4. When you're checking out websites, don't just look around at their selection. Check out their customer service policies. Some of the things you want to know about are:
  • Purchase, return and exchange policies
  • Customer service availability, such as chats and online representatives
  • Warranties and certifications
  • Shipping options and pricing
  • Special deals
  • Extra services, like customer education, informational forums, jewelry cleaning and fitting and repair service
5. Search for customer reviews, particularly on objective websites that aren't directly connected to the merchant in question. Read good reviews and bad with an objective eye. A large amount of good feedback and return business is a sign that you're dealing with a reliable shop.

The Pearl Source is an example of an online supplier of quality jewelry. Websites like www.thepearlsource.com and similar places on the Internet try to offer their customers extra value by educating visitors on the unique features of their products, offering advice on product selection and other customer satisfaction initiatives that are meant to provide value above routine service.

DERMKLENS SKIN CLEANSER: A PRODUCT REVIEW

Since the moment I knew skin cleansers exist, I have fondly embraced its indispensability when it comes to my daily beauty ceremony. It has then become a mainstay in my drawer hygiene stash and I have found a good reason for it to be part of my beauty budget.

I had just emptied the last of my basic bottle and thought I should drop by Watsons to pick up a new one. But you know, I’m just a vulnerable Eve that got so tempted to try a pretty, summer blouse tagged at 30% off the original price. It didn’t take me too long to decide (of course, when you want it, lol). And before I knew it, I was thrown out of my budget and oh my goodness, I know, this cleanser vanity of mine is really so out of the family card and I'm so out of my element to holding on to my financial mantra - control. But, I won’t be carting this out, swiping.  Read on why?

Minutes later I found myself standing in front of the ‘Face’ shelf tracing brands with my fingers and flipping boxes to see what fits, what’s left in my wallet. And then, I saw this DermKlens Skin Cleanser Advanced. It’s new to my eyes and the price, P79.00/60 ml is not so painful to see either. And so I thought I should try.

DERMKLENS SKIN CLEANSER: A PRODUCT REVIEW
As a consumer, this stamp is a mark of manufacturer’s assurance.
Always look for this whenever you buy one.

As a matter of personal beauty practice, I don’t just wash my BB creamed or foundationed face directly. Because doing so, I felt like the cream is still stuck thick in my pores and I know I’ll eventually have breakouts. Well, logically, most beauty creams we use are formulated with good amount of moisturizers and essential oils on it, hence, they clung to the skin. And, this is where this product (skin cleansers) is most useful to me. Skin cleansers aid in removing deep seated creams, thus, avoiding pore build-up and pimples eventually.

DERMKLENS SKIN CLEANSER: A PRODUCT REVIEW
DermKlens Skin Cleanser is formulated containing these ingredients …
You’re reading this often, aren’t you?

I should just trust DermKlens telling me that their product is paraben-free and contains Vitamin E and chamomile extract. Well, this is all I could do, trust! Right? Given we’re all out of the picture when the cream was made and packed.

True to its promise, it is indeed colorant and perfume free. I like my skin cleanser light, meaning formulated to be squelchy and watery. This kind of cream consistency will allow me to buff in the cream easily and lightly. With DermKlens, it’s a bit heavy. The consistency is creamy and thick, so I’ll have to put in a little pressure to spread and polish the cream around my face which I'm not so sold at.

DERMKLENS SKIN CLEANSER: A PRODUCT REVIEW

I use facial tissue to wipe off my facial top dirt and the applied cream. The scant period after wiping and before finishing the cleansing allowed me to test whether DermKlens lived up to its promise of leaving my skin soft, supple and not dry it off. Well, DermKlens has keep up to its promise. I like the after-effect - non-greasy, supple feel.

DermKlens is definitely your next inexpensive skin cleanser option. The larger bottle at 100ml is priced P126.00, whereas this 60ml is way too affordable for only P79.00.

What I like about DermKlens Skin Cleanser?
It’s very affordable and has lived up to its promise.

What I don’t like about DermKlens Skin Cleanser?
Consistency is thick and too creamy. Friction builds up before I can even round my face when applying the cream.

Will I recommend DermKlens Skin Cleanser?
Of course! You should try it to experience it. Got this from SM Watsons. Please don’t forget to come back and comment, let’s share notes about our product experience.
