The White House is indisputably the most famous and iconic presidential residence in the world. But back home, here in Davao. The White House is an old European-style house that was built in 1900s by a Scottish abaca plantation owner, Robert Kerr. It’s perched on a flourishing hill in the middle of the city. But thanks to Chef Cathy Binag, who spent all efforts to painstakingly restore the White House to bring back its timeworn glory.

‘I roamed around the city looking for old houses we can convert and renovate into a restaurant, and when I found this, I said, this is it.’ Chef Cathy Binag said contentedly. Today, the old house is a picture of graciousness and elegance with an unperturbed homey and comfortable ambiance of a fine dining restaurant called - The White House Fusion Cuisine and Wine Lounge.

The gracious lady of the house and the owner, Chef Cathy Binag told us that - The White House Fusion Cuisine, as a restaurant focuses on the fusion of Japanese and European fare, hence the name. They work on the food amalgamation of traditional Japanese flavors with European food techniques to come up with contemporary, distinctive and unrivaled fusion cuisine.

And to accord gastronomes with a more satisfying and exceptional food gusto experience, The White House also offers delectable degustation menu ranging from 5-7 courses. A fancy night out to a gaming hall is what I always thought an exciting and fun experience. Not only that you’ll be enjoying with friends and or with your lover if you’re coming with one, you’ll also be meeting casual acquaintances, meet new friends or chanced on possible prospective business partners all at the same time. We never know, but chances are always high, so it is always recommended that one should dress appropriately to impress when you’re in a lucrative spaces like this.

Now the question is, what on earth one should wear or what appropriate dress code one should observe when you plan a night out to a gaming den?

Unlike online gaming where you’ll simply be playing at the comforts of your home with flip-flops and oversize shirts on, and possibly with a bucket of popcorn and a can of soda on the side and leisurely do online routines at any time you have the desire to make the Roulettes board moving. Physical gaming on the other hand, is by far exceedingly taxing having to do all the outfit and make-up preps and planning, especially in choosing which ensemble to wear.

Apparently today, as what I’ve observed, there has been a regression when it comes to stringent gaming dress code in most casinos around the world. Operators deem it necessary for their clients to play in comfort and ease, hence the tolerance. But with the exemptions of those in London, Monte-Carlo and other opulent gaming clubs in Europe, they still go for the conventional routine where they require their clients to dress in their best before they can get into the hall.

Well, again, it depends on the venue; some gaming clubs are more casual than others. However, if you are going on a gaming destination holiday or celebrating an occasion in one of the most glamorous gaming halls in the world, like gracing the richest casino - The Venetian Macao, then why not have some fun and dress like a High Roller? It is exactly the reason why you’re heading down here, right?

Men can use the opportunity to dress up like their favourite character from Ocean's 11 and put on a smart suit. Famous picks include a grey suit, a designer vested suit or the signature black which will turn a boy into a hot and highly bankable man on the table.

Women on the other hand can also enjoy getting dressed up too. They’re the lucky stars in the hall you know, just be good to them and you’ll be seeing your fortune coming. Trust me! Ladies, if you want to go all out, you will find some fabulous full-length dresses on the high street as we speak or if you want something more understated then a cocktail style dress is perfect. But if you’re a lady gamer who care less about the bill on high labels, then its way better. Revealing a little of your skin won’t hurt you know, but do it with a little mystery at bay.

As for accessories, flashy is always good. The bling bling always looks great on the tables. Long necklaces or dangly, diamond studded earrings go perfectly well with this night. High valued jewelry can unexpectedly work double in case luck flew out of the hall. And Oh, don’t forget to pair it then with your killer stilettos.

SUDDEN FLIGHT SERIES AT THE PICASSO BY ABSTRACT PAINTER CHIQUI RODRIGUEZ

Filipino abstract painter, Chiqui Rodriguez announces her major new series entitled SUDDEN FLIGHT, her solo show to be held in Zurich by late summer will have its preview opening in a two-man show at the Picasso Boutique Serviced Residences, hosted by Altromondo Gallery on 22 May 2014 and continuing through 18 July 2014.

The 15 selected paintings from a total of over 100 works that comprise the SUDDEN FLIGHT series, awash in vibrant color, are sure to dazzle visitors to the Picasso Boutique Serviced Residences. Chiqui’s unique approach to blending acrylic pigments on canvas creates gem-like surfaces. Peering through the surface to what is depicted below, the viewer realizes that all is not as glowing as it first appears. Chiqui is noted for her deep abstraction of complex realism.

Chiqui also explores a complex subject; her work calls attention to our culture’s thought of hardwork. Much of Chiqui’s artwork is influenced by her experience in the corporate world. Through this new body of work, she connects hardwork to social class as a form of meditation.

Says Chiqui of her SUDDEN FLIGHT series, “I was inspired by my short trip to Brussels after a show held in Berlin in 2013. I arrived with the intent of finding an artist who would be willing to collaborate with me in my upcoming projects, so I started to look around. Instead of finding an artist, I found some Filipinos who work around the city. My interaction with them in a different environment led to varied conversations about how challenging life is to be away from their love ones but nevertheless find solace knowing that their families benefit from their sacrifice. I started on my e-sketchpad and started to express my thoughts after this encounter. The title 'Sudden Flight' refers to several layers of meaning: sudden burst of happiness, excitement as reaching out lives of far-flung Filipinos extending compassion, a moment of bliss.” The show plans to bring forward awareness on the inner thoughts of Overseas Filipino Workers.

About the artist:

Chiqui Rodriguez enjoys telling people how she started as an artist. It kicked-off one morning discussing the paintings she had been working on back in 2003 while having coffee with her long-time confidante.

Fearful that she did not finish a BFA degree, she was nevertheless encouraged to share her work publicly because painting has been her hobby since she was six. Through her renewed confidence and the opportunity entrusted in her, she learned that she can do anything to cultivate her art. With this experience, she believed that she can also inspire others that everything is possible if you put your heart into it. Chiqui went on to develop her signature painting style since then. The politically motivated environment of the Philippines and her adventures while traveling between Asia Pacific and Europe molded her ideals of optimism, hope and internal happiness. The first of five series from her upcoming exhibition “Sudden Flight” is now viewable through chiquirodriguez.com and Saatchi Art. Hello everyone, hope you're all doing good. I have a feeling you're all winding down after weeks of juggling schedules with your children's end of school programs and getting high with your kids bagging awards on their graduations as well.

The excitement has died down I guess, and we all can breathe in peace now. Oh, I thought so we can, but we just can’t. Because, another episode of life's excitement is yet to come - summer and vacation!

I know you have your summer vacation scheduled ahead of time, and by now, I can see excited and giddy faces packing up for the much-awaited pleasures in the sun. I know you have your travel check list ready and just in case you are forgetting something, there is one important must-have you should include in that list - your hygiene kit with a mouthwash on it.

Traveling is so much fun but sometimes no matter how we put comfort in our travel plans there is always this margin or incidents for discomfort waiting to happen. And I think you'll all agree, this part is where we're priming at. Forgive my 'OCness', I'm just a comfy traveller, jejeje.

Getting and staying clean and fresh is a luxury when you're on mobile, especially when navigating under tight schedules and moving around places and spaces you are not so familiar with. You can't take a bath, you can't brush your teeth, can't pee under crazy circumstance either. But here's a tip, (that one item I was saying I can't travel without) bring along a mouthwash with you. It'll save you time and sanity especially on long hauls, long bus trips and taut trip arranges in between. Trust me, been there, done that.

These are few of my trusted names when I’m on the road, on sea or on air. Actually, the truth is, there ain’t no one item I can’t travel without, there are many of them, lol. They always say - travel light. Well, I do. Can’t you see? These babies come in all their light glories - travel sizes; it’s just that my bag is too small for them. (LOL) Seriously, I hope one day I can travel without baggage to check in or extra kilos to worry about. But heck, that mother packer in me is such a long-standing habit that’s really hard to break.

LOMBOY LIGHT SWEET TROPICAL FRUIT WINE by Bundy Wine

I found this wine by accident. I was on my out of Davao City Engineer’s Office the other day when I saw few make-shift stalls lined at one corner of Rizal Park selling veggies and fruits. The fresh produce kiosks were organized by Department of Agriculture in line with the celebration of Farmers and Fisherfolk’s month. I thought I should drop by and buy banana. And then, I was called by a lady asking me to free-taste their wine. Well, who doesn’t like free stuff these days, so I paid regard. The next thing I knew, I’m walking home clutching a bottle of this Lomboy wine.

Lomboy or Duhat (Syzygium cumini) is by my memory one of the summer fruit symbols of my childhood. If you grow up in the province and have known a settled Lomboy tree around, you’ll know that it’s this time of the year too where their berries get full purple and is perfectly right for picking, salt or sugar shaking and get your tongue completely plumed. Sadly, life in the city is so often devoid of this laid back leisure, hence, one can just reminisce. But I think I have just another way of reliving that experience, that is to get into the spirit of the fruit itself.

I’m quiet abreast with the growing industry of local winery using tropical fruits. But using Lomboy to make one is kind of evolved innovation for me, well, nothing really novel as Lomboys or Duhats are fruits packed with acid aplenty, so there’s always this potential in the offing it could land in a bottle in one of these fortunate days. And I know it’s just a matter of who will do it.

THE GEOGRAPHY OF BLISS: A happy and witty read

I first heard of this book when my mentor-priest, back when I was still having my master's course work talked about this in our research class. The author, Eric Weiner went around the world finding the happiest place on Earth, negotiating and emerging himself with different cultures to understand and to get the gist of the many perspectives of happiness.

OK, I won't talk about the research methodology, moreso the academic merits of how this book came to be and what methodology the researchers used to measure happiness. Or can happiness really be measured? I'll leave that to those who eat statistics for breakfast.

It's been a while since I read a book where I spit my coffee on it, dropped muffin crumble on it, write on it and most of all chuckle like crazy and look around sensing someone might be looking at me. This book just made me do all them without inhibitions. If you want a past time looking like crazy, well, in a witty way, I suggest you get a copy of this book.

I've read a lot of literature about Bhutan and how their King has made Happiness a National Policy, but Eric's narrative describing this place made me realize, my God I should be moving now and find that Shangri-La everyone has been longing and hope I won’t be missing to see and to be. In this account Weiner described Bhutan to be ... A place of eternal peace where monks meditate, poets muse, and everyone lives impossibly long and satisfying lives. I've read and I've seen a fair number of documentaries about Bhutan, but it’s only this book that made me settle and say, wow, maybe I can die here.

Another place he visited was Iceland. He described happiness here as failure. In a world where one is always measured not by his or her failures but by his or her success, I'm thinking I should spend the remaining years of my life in Iceland - I care less if I'll toil for six months in the dark, at least here, I'm free to fail and free to try again.

This is one of my good reads this month, a spirit lifter, a witty pastime following the life of a dying coffee magnate in that book 'The Coffee Story'.
