Women in 40-ish I suppose have the highest tendency to getting eye bags compared to women of younger age. Part 1. Siquijor Island Seascape 

I went cleaning up my drive and I was greeted with a sheer actuality that, oh my gosh, I actually have tons of photos unpublished from our trip last summer in Siquijor Island. We’re up for another trip this year, so I thought I should share before another SD card get to slip my camera data slot. I thought this might inspire you to pack a sarong or two to take some time to this island I call my immaculate paradise . 

Getting here is no hassle at all; there are regular trips from Cebu City and Dumaguete City that frequents the island. I made a post on how to get to Siquijor Island if you’re coming from Cebu or Dumaguete City here, check it out. 

We stayed at Coral Cay Resort when we were there and it was an all-good experience. Check out their site http://www.coralcayresort.com/ for reservation.

Isak Dinesen once said that, “The cure for anything is saltwater – sweat, tears or THE SEA.” So here we go, let’s see Siquijor Island’s seascape and hoping somehow this would send all your uncertainties away.

A community by the sea. The first you'll see when approaching the island.

The Siquijor Port. I really find this place so theatrical. When I was taking this photo I was visualizing a panting man running after her woman who left off on a boat. Heck, too much watching Korean Drama, lol.

Walkway by the sea. Siquijor Island has zero crime rate, so even if you stay here late no one's gonna touch you. It's best to hire a motorcyle to take you around the island, and also you can always request for a stop at any place you find interesting.

Mesmeric. The first thing you'll ever do when you arrive - think nothing and just look at the sea in awe.

Thinking corner. My favorite place the whole week we're here.

Bromance. I spotted these guys while wandering around. I thought I should really write about the ordeal of some of fishermen affected by the booming tourism on this island. But first, how can I not admire the beauty of this capture - pure and unspoiled.

Seashore lullaby. On high tide, the seawater reaches the bottom of this rattan hammock. It scared the heck out of me the first I woke up with water gushing under me. I thought I was drifted in the middle of nowhere. Sunset from this corner is so breathtaking, you could cry.

Solitude. The best place to reconnect with your soul and be the best company of yourself.

Keep Calm and dream on.

Salagdoong Beach.

Salagdoong Beach. The seawater slide - the landing is too deep, I got scared to try.

The waiting mermaid. Legend has it that this place used to be a place where a mermaid appeared always waiting for his human boyfriend. But for some reasons, the man did not show up anymore and that the mermaid took her life and was found dead in this place. And so, to immortalize the legend, the owner of this place made a mermaid sculpture and place it on the same spot she used to wait.

The unfathomable double-edged nature. How can it be that at one point this can be the calmest of seas and at some point, the most frantic and deadliest of seas?

The Innocence of summer. This is how children make memories - carefree, pure, natural yet the happiest I know it can be. I learned so much from their laughters just watching them from afar.

The perfect golden hour.

The sunrise. A new day begins on this island.

The sunset. A nostalgic promise that another wonderful day is yet to come.

 For a bride, her veil can hold many meanings. For some, it's about hiding a bride until she gets to the front and can be revealed to her future husband. For others, it's just a beautiful headpiece. Every time I come home from my class at night I always see this little girl sitting by the ledge of this small make-shift store assembled under a corner's street lamp post. This little barung-barung store is a must-stop for me before I’ll get across the street and head home. Her opened tattered pink bag, few notebooks and papers spread around her, anyone who can see her would certainly reckon she’s doing her school assignments unmindful of the passersby in the same manner that the passersby don't mind her at all.

One night I really got curious and took my time to round the corner of this barung-barung. She saw me coming but she didn’t mind at all, her icy gaze just passed through me as if I’m a cold unseen being. Careful not to stun her, I politely asked;

“Anong pangalan mu?’

She didn’t answer but motioned her hand instead to let me move out of the light. I realized she needed the light coming from the lamp post so she can see the lines in her notes. I didn’t say anything but I slowly sat at the far end of the sill. Her short, badly sharpened black jumbo pencil rolled down from her lap and fell near my foot I picked it up and handed it to her, she smiled and said;

“thank you po,”

“bakit dito ka nagsusulat at nagbabasa, medyo madilim dito ah, di mu masyado makikita yung letra ng binabasa mu,”

She looked at me coldly and said;

“mas madilim sa bahay namin, walang ilaw, buti dito maliwanag na, wala pang bayad at mas maliwanag kesa kandila,”

“wala kayong kuryente?”

“Wala eh, matagal na, walang pambayad si mama”

“Nasaan pala ang mama mu?”

She pouted her mouth towards the woman that sells balut at the other side of the road.

“Ibig mung sabihin si Manang nanay mu?”

“Opo”

Manang is my suki balut vendor. I often would stop and buy from her penoy as I can't take the ones with bigger chick. I know she has a number of children as they would play on the side road as if it were their playground on some occasions that I’m buying from her. Sometimes if I have the appetite I took time to sit beside her warm balut bucket and start a conversation of just about anything, gossips of who our neighbors date usually, whilst I see an occupied night world unfolding.

Just like any mother, it pained her so much seeing her children unable to attend school because she can’t afford it but what I didn’t know was that she has a girl child who braves the perils of the night to work on her assignments under the street light post.

A thousand horses went running wild at the back of my mind, they’re finding reasons why an innocent and diligent girl like her has to suffer and witness the cruelty of her society that is supposed to safeguard her, yet on the other end I thought – this is a classic example of human perseverance and resourcefulness, no electricity at home or poverty for that matter is not an excuse not to pursue an education you just have to be quick-witted and you can manage your way out of desolation.

But for realists, this scene is a downright cry for social justice. We often hear our authorities talk about change and promise to give equal opportunity to everyone, but the way things are, promise is such a solitary word and as obscure as the surroundings of this poor little girl.

I figured, this is one of the discourses of our society that we don’t know who blame anymore, the state for not providing enough opportunity and inadequate human capital assistance so this Manang balut vendor and the category she represent,  can have a decent job so she can pay for their electricity and be able to send her children to school, our socio-cultural-economic set-up that requires each one of us to get an education so we can be equipped to carry-on our civilization, our religion that warns us to stay in course and multiply the herd, or is it just me who thinks so much that in the end would bear the burden of guilt for not extending help to this child.

But I guess today is no time to point finger at anybody, we just have to find opportunity in every predicament that will come our way and if only each one of us has this child’s tenacity, there’s no reason why we can’t be what we want to be.

“Aileen po ang pangalan ko”

“Aileen, ilang taon ka na?”

“7 po,”

“Ilan kayo magkakapatid?”

“8 po”

“Saan na ang tatay mu?”

“Hindi ko po alam”

“Ano ang gusto mu maging paglaki mu?”

“Gusto kong mag-aral ng mabuti at paglaki ko pupunta ako sa palasyo ng presidente at sabihin ko sa kanya na yung sinabi nya sa TV hindi naman nangyari sa amin.”

When I was a little girl just like you Aileen, I also have studied hard and wished that one day I can come to the president’s palace and tell President Ferdinand Marcos that what he has said, promised did not happen at all. I’ve live past six presidents already, Oh gee, don't ever ask how old am I today? But I still eat the same penoy and still have seen the same heartbreaking faces just like you tonight. Maybe those who were able to come to the President’s palace have not seen or hear you at all.

But you have the insistence Aileen and this is what is more important to make it through, because in the end not me nor the President can ever help you but only you, yourself. Nonetheless, I still feel I have the obligation towards this little girl, Band-aid as it maybe pero ika nga walang tutulong sa Pilipino kundi kapwa Pilipino.

“Gabi-gabi ka ba nandito?”

“Opo, pag di umuulan,”

“Paano yan pag umuulan?”

“kandila nalang, sa bahay”

"Ano bang inaaral mu?"

"Math po"

"Gusto mu turuan kita?"

"Talaga po?"

You know that face that glow when one's happy? I saw it in hers even in darkness.

“Sige, abangan mu ako dito bukas ha? Dahil mabait ka, papalitan ko yang lapis mu at may ibibigay ako sayo at tuturuan pa kita.”

Mind you learning how to count 1 to 100 in Filipino is easiest when you do it by counting cars, jeepneys, motorcycles and trucks passing by.

That's actual and creative learning.

It's kind of dusty tutoring by the sideroad but I don't mind because I look pretty with sodium lights on you know.

OK, I’m into this every January of each year. Having lived with a lot of Chinese people around the compound, I can’t get away with my life's fortune without having to sit on our stairway and wait for my life’s verdict and know how it will go for the rest of the year. 

Alright, so my fortune has been laid out to me like I thought was a red carpet full of sound anticipation - glitz and glamour. But I had a fight with the fortune teller before him ruling out a verdict therefore, my life would be; 

Horse doesn't like Rat at all. In other words my life would be doomed in 2014! Hahaha [I could have brought peace offering had I known he’d scare the crap out of my mini brain. LOL. I know you’d read this bofu, hahaha, thanks for scaring the mousy in me and also for the generous antidotes.

According to my bófù and to this site called chinesefortunecalendar.com, the rat [that’s me] will have a tough year this year, as horses despise rats to the bones. Rat contains water. Horse contains fire and earth. Earth can make water disappear and bring pressure on rat. [How sad is that?] To fight with fire and Earth, Rat water will be exhausted in 2014. Therefore, Rat people will feel not enough energy in 2014. And etc., etc., etc. all the bad stuff. 

What is just so good about these predictions is that, there are ready antidotes much potent than the poison itself. And of course, the human mind that works to command your shoulders to shrug the bad and think only of the good. 

But I’ve rule my life’s own verdict, the rats will ran the race this year – fiercer, stronger, faster, trickier and will get to the finish line way ahead of the horse. Who knows it’ll be another turtle and hare story. I’ve no doubt it’ll be.

If there’s one book every woman should own or get interest in reading to- that would be Dr. Clarissa Estes’ Women Who Run With the Wolves, Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype. I was introduced to this book years ago and It has been my woman Bible ever since. I have run through all the pages of this paperback and had run out of the woods so my life will begin. But this book is so full of wisdom and fascinating stories that gets through the feminine psyche, hence, I still go back to reading random pages of it from time to time.

To my fellow wolves out there, if you’re feeling you’re being cut off from your intuitive nature, read this book and see yourself reconnected with the core of your womanhood again. 

 I’ll leave you these lines, to encourage you to pick this book the next time you see one on the shelf. 

The ways and means of living with the instinctive nature are many, and the answers to your deepest questions change as you change and as the world changes, so it cannot be said: “Do this, and this, in this particular oder, and all will be well.” But, over my lifetime as I’ve met wolves, I have tried to puzzle out how they live, for the most part, in such harmony. Apo View Hotel recently launched a handy Davao City street guide; it’s a customized city map that invites visitors to set-off a Davao foot adventure with Apo View Hotel as their starting point. The map contains practical insider information a tourist would need to navigate around important cultural and historical attractions in downtown Davao. And to test the ‘walkability’ of the map, Apo View Hotel invited the celebrated Manila tour expert and cultural activist Carlos Celdran to do the road tour called ‘Carlos Celdran does Davao’.

After two days on foot following the map, feeling and seeing the heart of Davao City, he revealed that ‘it’s about time Davao City should push pedestrian tourism and promote the culture of walking.’ With Davao City’s remarkable accomplishments, such as the most livable city in Asia, the country’s cleanest and greenest city, best police office in the country, the smoking ban in public spaces, the banning of videoke shortly before midnight and the recently implemented speed limit in the city – these factors made Davao City all the more very ready for pedestrianization. 

There has to be little improvements to be done though. Correspondingly, upgrading of parks, constructing more generously-spaced sidewalks, one can tell it’s a nice city through its sidewalks you know. More street lamps and supplementary improvements along Roxas Avenue that would include bike lanes and bike racks, park benches, and what-I-hope would be included - artists freedom wall, a wishing wall, love locks lane like the ones in Prague in which according to Mr. Celdran, a very potential space to be a pedestrianized boulevard.

He added that he has no doubts it can be done in this city as it only takes political will to do it. And if there’s one city that has it, it is Davao City!

My favorite moment at a wedding is when the bride is walking towards the groom and everyone is looking at her. The coolest part when all this is happening is the guy’s look.
